Unless you’ve created a non-diet bubble for yourself, you most likely hear stories about peoples’ diets on a regular basis. And you don’t just hear stories about their diets, you also hear stories about your co-worker’s friend’s niece’s diet and how cutting out sugar or gluten or dairy or red foods worked wonders for giving her energy, clearing up her skin, increasing her fertility, or losing weight. Through the grapevine, you hear only part of the story. You don’t hear about what the person actually did and didn’t eat, what their genetic makeup is, and what other confounding factors there were (did the person make any other changes at the same time as the diet). You also don’t know about their relationship with food.
So when you hear these stories, take it with a grain of salt. No one has found the miracle diet to treat and prevent all disease and you most likely won’t find out about it this way. If you have questions about a particular diet you hear about, take those questions to a registered dietitian nutritionist. We have more science based answers than your average person and can steer you in the right direction.
