If Your Diet is Working for You, Then I’m Truly Happy For You and You Keep Doing You

if your diet is working for you

One of the misconceptions about anti-diet dietitians is that we dislike all diets and all people who diet. This, of course is just not true. Being anti-diet is being anti- diet culture and anti- oppression of people who feel the only way they can be accepted in society is to punish their bodies endlessly with restrictive diets. If someone tells me that the diet they’re on is working for them (meaning they don’t feel obsessed with food, they’re not binge eating, their daily life is not significantly impacted by the diet, and they have achieved their desired health outcomes) then I have no problem with that and I would congratulate the person for finding something that works for them.

Unfortunately, this is very rare to hear and I have never had a client in my office who can say that their diet is actually working. So, we try something other than a diet and we help them relearn how to eat in a way apart from diet culture.
